The Way of Transcendence - Go small
In most religious philosophies there is an element of transcendence seeking. Different pathways are suggested, some involve detachment, others shamanic style journeys or spiritual disciplines. In this context it is interesting to see how, for Jesus, in much of his teaching, transcendence first involves descent.
It reminds me of Alice: in order to enter into Wonderland, she first descends down the rabbit hole, she then has to drink shrinking potion to fit through a small door. Jesus likened the entrance to the Kingdom of God with the eye of a needle, (which was a very small entrance into the city of Jerusalem) when he said 'it is easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle, than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God'. Transcending, therefore, involves some kind of stripping away, like going through that airport gate, shoeless and de-jewelled.
Jesus also speaks about become like a child to enter the Kingdom, or becoming a servant to find greatness. All this leads us to understand that Jesus's concept of transcendence is to go small. It occurs to me, that perhaps its only when we can see God in the smallest thing in 'the least' that we can see God in everything.
'Whatever you do for one of the least of these, you did it for me' Jesus. Could that be true enlightenment?
